PITTSBURGH, PA — A man jumped the fence at the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium Wednesday night and began running toward various animals, Pittsburgh public safety officials said.
No animals were harmed in the incident, which began when a man breached the perimeter fence around 8 p.m.
The zoo maintains a 24-hour security staff who quickly became aware of the man's presence. He was taken into custody by city police; no charges have been filed.
"As part of our extensive safety protocols, the zoo conducts regular drills for emergency situations to keep animals and guests safe," zoo CEO Jeremy Goodman said in a statement. "We responded quickly and we had the right people here to take action: security and animal care staff. Everyone did everything right."
The zoo is operating as usual on Thursday.
