ORLAND PARK, IL — An Orland Park Police midnight patrol officer found a stolen car and learned it had been taken by a convicted felon, according to the Orland Park Police Department.
The officer was doing a business check at the Circle K, 9370 159th St., around 3 a.m. Monday when they spotted an unoccupied vehicle in the north end of the parking lot, according to police.
Police said the officer conducted a Secretary of State inquiry on the car's the registration and learned the vehicle was reported stolen two days ago from Libertyville, Illinois. The officer called for backup while waiting for someone to return to the vehicle, according to police.
Moments later, police say they identified Anthony Slater, 23, of Chicago, who exited the Circle K and was arrested as he tried to open the driver's side door of the stolen vehicle.
Police said upon investigating they found Slater was currently wanted out of DuPage County for possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Slater's criminal background also includes three past convictions for possession of stolen motor vehicle, according to police.
Police said Slater was transported to the Bridgeview Courthouse where the Honorable Judge Linzey Jones set a $10,000 I-Bond for Slater.
All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
