Hi, I'm trying to meet other Cockatoo owners in Maine in the hope of working out some kind a pet-care exchange. I adopted Sammy 13 years ago and he's 23-24 y/o and very bonded to me, but he's also very friendly to everyone. He's a well adjusted and sweet little guy who is generally friendly to everyone he meets.
I'm not even remotely interested in re-homing him to anyone...unless you happen to live in Australia OR you happen to have an enormous outdoor aviary and a flock of other happy domestic umbrella cockatoos he could join. He will intermittently scream extremely loudly if he's left alone for extended periods during the day so an apartment with neighbors is not an ideal situation.
I have to move out of my apt in Portland this May and I'm having a hard time finding a new apt at all, let alone one that allows pets. I'm really hoping to meet other Cockatoo owners who would be willing to talk about a pet-care trade. It's hard to find someone I trust to care for him when I'm gone. In the past I've boarded him at Seymour's Bird Refuge in Gray but they're unable to offer boarding now. Please send me a message if you have experience with larger parrots and might be interested in a parrot-care trade or even just keeping him for a few months while I'm in between apartments. I can definitely pay someone for boarding him but I would prefer someone who also has large birds, or some experience with large parrots.
I've been a professional petsitter for many years and have many references upon request!
Thanks in advance, Beth
