Description
PHOENIXVILLE, PA — Six people were rescued from the Schuylkill River in the Phoenixville area over the weekend as kayakers and boaters encountered dangerous currents due to recent storms.
The main incident occurred at around 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 on the water near Fitzwater Station.
Several kayakers had overturned as they floated down the river. Three of them were stranded on a small island in the river, and another three were in the water.
The Phoenixville Fire Department, Black Rock Volunteer Fire. Co., Friendship Fire Company, and Collegeville Fire Department responded to the scene and launched boats to assist in the rescue.
All six were safely rescued, and none required medical treatment.
First responders were also on the scene earlier in the day on the river Saturday after a different group of kayakers became stranded near Port Providence.
Officials remind residents to be aware of conditions on the river and to always wear life vests when engaging in recreational activities in the water.
