PHILADELPHIA — Soccer still does not have the same impact as sports such as football, basketball, and baseball in the United States. But the 2026 FIFA World Cup could change that, especially here in Philadelphia, as the city bidding on hosting the quadrennial soccer tournament. If Philly is chosen, matches would be held at Lincoln Financial Field. Seventeen cities are bidding to host World Cup matches. However, only 10 will be chosen. On the website set up for residents and fans to support the bid, officials highlight the success of other major events hosted in the city as a reason to host the World Cup. "From political conventions to Pope Francis to the NFL Draft, Philadelphia knows how to shine on the biggest stages under the brightest lights," the website reads. You can visit the city's website here on hosting the World Cup to lend support for the bid. FIFA will announce what 10 cities it picked by 2021. The United States hosted the World Cup in 1994. Venues that hosted matches then included Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium in Washington, D.C.; Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey; and Foxboro Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. The 2022 World Cup is scheduled to be held in Qatar.
