PHILADELPHIA — Reading Terminal Market in Philadelphia is one of the city's most popular and heavily trafficked spots. It holds a place in the hearts of natives whose families called Philadelphia home for generations and tourists who come visit the City of Brotherly Love. And now, the famous and historic market is looking for help from its admirers to stay open. In a GoFundMe campaign, the market is seeking to raise $250,000 to stay open. "In March of this year, everything changed," the fundraiser page reads. Despite the market staying open, it suffered a hit as roughly 30 percent of its business comes from tourists and those going to conventions and events at the Pennsylvania Convention Center across the street. "But we need your help to sustain our operations and support our recovery, so we can continue to provide for our community," the page reads. As of Friday morning, $4,880 of the $250,000 has been raised. The market is managed by a 501(c)3 non-profit corporation and donations to the campaign are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law. "We need your help to ensure that we can continue serving Philadelphia with fresh affordable local food," the page reads. "We need your help to keep serving Philadelphia's favorite flavors to all our shoppers. We need your help to keep the lights on and power the building, keep the ventilation systems working, support the frequent cleaning and disinfecting that ensures that you will be safe when you come to the Market we all love."
