PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia's food scene is one of the nation's best, and more and more often is getting recognized by major players in the food world. Most recently Food & Wine named two spots in the city among the nation's best butcher shops and meat markets. "The Best Butcher Shops and Meat Markets in America" list features nearly 100 shops across the United States. Food & Wine said the "more sustainable, the more rebellious against the prevailing winds in a morally corrupt industry" shops were chosen alongside some shops that have been around for more than 100 years. In Philadelphia, it was Czerw's Kielbasy and Primal Meat Supplies that found themselves on the list. Here's what Food & Wine says about Czerw's: Way up Northeast, not far from a certain year-round landscaping company of some sudden renown, Polish immigrant Jan Czerw opened up shop—building his own brick smokehouses—back in 1938, selling good kielbasa to the people. Very little has changed, except now the grandkids run the show. One of those places that people who left town decades ago will happily drive back for—sometimes for hours. And here's what they wrote about Primal Meat Supplies: Local star on the scene Heather Thomason has become a force to be reckoned with, offering twin shops, delivery service, and a meat subscription/CSA program, always sourcing from the very best farms in the region. As anybody who knows Eastern Pennsylvania can tell you, that's a pretty deep field. Other Pennsylvania shops and markets featured on the list are Cabalar Meat Co. in Lancaster, Kiefer's Smoked Meats in Manheim, Kowalonek's Kielbasy Shop in Shenandoah, Rooster Street Butcher in Lititz, and Strip District Meats in Pittsburgh.
