I-76 Closing During Daytime, Nighttime In Philadelphia Next Week

PHILADELPHIA — Interstate 76 will have full closures and lane restrictions next week in both directions in Center City Philadelphia, PennDOT said. Viaduct work will force PennDOT to restrict and close eastbound and westbound lanes during the daytime and overnight starting Tuesday. On Tuesday and Wednesday next week, eastbound I-76 will be closed between the 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges for viaduct repairs and paving from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning. During the closure, eastbound through motorists will be detoured on eastbound Interstate 676 to southbound Interstate 95, then back to eastbound I-76. Eastbound local motorists will exit at 30th Street, follow 30th Street around the station, turn right on Market Street, left on 38th Street, and straight on University Avenue to 34th Street to access the ramp to eastbound I-76. Additionally, westbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane Tuesday through Thursday from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. the next morning. The affected stretch is between the 30th Street and I-676 interchanges. The westbound I-76 ramp to 30th Street also will be closed Motorists normally using this ramp will be directed to eastbound I-676, exit at 23rd Street, then turn right on 22nd Street to JFK Boulevard, then right back to 30th Street. Then from noon Friday to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14, westbound I-76 will be closed between the University Avenue and 30th Street interchanges. The westbound on-ramps from University Avenue, Vare Avenue and South Street will be closed. Westbound I-76 through motorists coming from New Jersey will be directed to go north on I-95, then west on I-676 to access westbound I-76. Westbound local motorists will exit at University Avenue and follow the posted detours to the ramp to I-76 west; and Additionally, eastbound I-76 will be reduced to one lane between 30th Street and University Avenue interchanges for barrier installation starting Friday at noon to 5 a.m. Monday, Sept. 14. The South Street on- and off-ramps to and from eastbound I-76 also will be closed. Motorists normally using these ramps will be directed to follow local detours. Drivers are advised to use an alternate route or allow extra time when traveling through the work areas because significant backups and delays will occur. All scheduled activities are weather permitting.
