Philly School District Gets $1.65M For Special Needs Support

PHILADELPHIA, PA — The School District of Philadelphia was awarded grant funding that will help provide services for students with special needs during the coronavirus pandemic. Gov Tom Wolf Thursday announced 678 education agencies across the state are receiving a portion of $20 million from the Governor's Emergency Education Relief Fund and the Pennsylvania Department of Education's federal funding. The district was awarded $1,655,696.41. These funds will allow the district to provide enhanced real-time instruction and services and support to students with special needs, who experienced a loss in skills and behavior or experienced a lack of progress because of mandatory school closures. According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education, an additional $5 million in Governor's Emergency Education Relief grant funding will be available to Preschool Early Intervention programs to provide compensatory educational services. The Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act authorizes governors to determine the educational use of Governor's Emergency Education Relief Funds, which can be used towards the safe reopening of schools in light of the coronavirus pandemic.
