2 Stretches Of Kedzie Avenue To Undergo Major Improvements: IDOT

CHICAGO, IL – Four miles of Kedzie Avenue will undergo major upgrades as part of a $5 million project that will include repaving, safety upgrades and increased access for people with disabilities, Illinois Sen. Bill Cunningham and the Illinois Department of Transportation announced on Thursday. The upgrades will include two stretches of Kedzie Ave. – one of which will run from 87th St. to 103rd St. and the second of which will extend from 115th St. to 131st St., Cunningham indicated in a news release. In addition to repaving, the repairs include providing better lane markings and divisions as well as making the street crossings safer for people confined to wheelchairs or who have limited mobility. Cunningham said that Kedzie Ave. is a major artery connecting the City of Chicago with the suburbs and that because of it connects area homes and businesses, it is important to properly maintain the thoroughfare. "I'm happy that whenever the state makes road upgrades, it makes sidewalks and crossings more accessible," Cunningham said in the news release. "Everyone should be able to safely travel through their own neighborhood." The Kedzie upgrades are part of IDOT's multi-year plan to expand the state's transportation infrastructure. Other projects scheduled for the coming year include land acquisition at the corner of Southwest Highway and Harlem Ave. for future improvements and repainting the Harlem Ave. bridge over the Cal-Sag Channel.
