OAK FOREST, IL — The drivers of both cars that crashed on Interstate 80 Wednesday night have died. Illinois State Police on Thursday confirmed the deaths of Samuel Sahagun-Banuelos, 23, of Lansing and Keith Bowers, 48, of Merrillville, Indiana.
Initial information from police indicates that around 11:14 p.m. on April 1 Sahagun-Banuelos was the driver of a 2003 Toyota Sequoia headed westbound in the eastbound lanes of I-80 near where it crosses with Interstate 57 near Oak Forest. The car crashed with a 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Bowers, that was headed eastbound in the center lane, police said.
The Toyota struck the Chevrolet and came to a rest facing westbound on the left shoulder, while the Chevrolet came to a rest on the right shoulder facing eastbound, police said.
Both drivers were entrapped in the cars after the crash and both died at the scene, according to police.
An investigation closed the eastbound lanes of I-80 for a little more than three hours.
