GREENWICH, CT — The FBI is warning the public of ongoing widespread fraud schemes in which scammers impersonate law enforcement or government officials in attempts to extort money or steal personally identifiable information.
Greenwich police said in a Facebook post that law enforcement authorities or government officials will never contact members of the public by telephone to demand any form of payment, or request personal or sensitive information.
"Legitimate investigations will be done in person or by official letter. Always ask for credentials to validate identity," the Greenwich Police Department's post said.
Authorities will also never request payment via prepaid cards or cryptocurrency.
"If you are a victim stop contact with the scam immediately. Contact your financial institution to protect your acconts," police said.
