BROOKLINE, MA — Brookline High School students walked out of classes Friday to protest anti-LGBTQ legislation in Florida and Texas, reported NBC 10. Hundreds of students participated in the walkout, listened to a speaking presentation, and joined a series of chants to show their disapproval of government actions and concern that the hate could spread to other states. "Around the country, people just like us here in Brookline are losing their rights to be who they are," Brookline High School Senior Oliver Slayton told NBC 10. "If it could be them, it could just as well be us tomorrow." The anti-LGBTQ legislation includes Florida's "Don't Say Gay" bill, which would ban schools from discussing sexuality and gender identity in certain classrooms. In addition, Texas Governor Greg Abbott's recent directive tells the state's Department of Family and Protective Services to investigate gender-affirming care as child abuse.
