Description
Hi.
I'm a drum set player. My idea is to use bass, drum set, keys, and guitar in
rhythmic ways to explore unique swaggers, cadences, and groovy,
trance-inducing instrumental interentwanglements.
I'm not a professional performer, but I play African percussion on a regular basis
and teach it locally and internationally.
I have spent a good bit of time studying percussion music in Mali, West Africa.
It has influenced my tastes and musical sensibility on the drum set.
It would be nice to make music that:
> has juicy bass and a solid groove,
> ample space so as not to stifle stank,
> plenty of greasy polyrhythmic conversation
> a dissonant or minor melodic feel
> feels heavy
> has call and response between instruments
Sometimes this might take the form of adapting traditional Malian percussion
phrases into rhythmic conversational elements that talk back and forth.
Check out this growing playlist to get an idea of the sound aesthetic that
approximates what I envision us doing.

It would be nice to avoid:
> overplaying
> technical tricks for their own sake, or to try to be "interesting" or "amazing",
> too much bass slapping
> frequent changes and arrangements which cut the groove short
We wouldn’t be gigging right away (maybe never).
I'd like to spend some time together grooving on a regular basis first.
Eventually, I could see us recording and playing
gigs after setting up a solid rhythm section and carving out a unique sound.
I have a jam studio available in Fremont that we can use when we meet.
I’m in my late 30s.
Please contact me if you think this would be fun.
Thanks.
Aaron
