BENSALEM, PA — A new Amazon fulfillment center in Bucks County has taken a big step closer to reality. Bensalem Towship Council members last week voted unanimously to approve Amazon's development plan for the warehouse and property. An Amazon representative said the center will create about 315 jobs. About 100 Amazon employees will be working at the warehouse and another 215 are expected to be hired as delivery drivers and managers. Over the summer, Amazon signed a lease agreement for a warehouse on 3750 State Rd., at Winks Lane, in Bensalem. The 235,240-square-foot warehouse would be a fulfillment center, which is where merchandise is stored and deliveries begin. The company said it expects some operations at the warehouse to get started by the middle of October and to be fully up and running by mid-February through March. The Bensalem warehouse is part of an expansion plan by Amazon which it says will speed up deliveries. The company last week leased a warehouse in northeast Philadelphia for a similar fulfillment center. Another is planned in Berks County. There will be no customer pickup at the Bensalem center, company representatives said at the council meeting. At the meeting, Councilman Ed Tokmajian asked Amazon if there is any way to ensure a percentage of the workers are Bensalem residents. Company representatives said there's no way to guarantee a percentage, but that they routinely work with municipalities to host job fairs and other promotions. Company officials have agreed to make "substantial" roadwork improvements in the area to address traffic concerns and say that Amazon's own noise rules are stricter than the township's. Additional landscaping that Amazon plans also will help with noise, they said.
