Description
We have a sweet, friendly blackbelly x who is looking for a wonderful farmily in SoCal! This chill guy is Deckard. He is 3/4 Barbados blackbelly and 1/4 dorper. He has been vaccinated for scrapies, is around 5 yrs old, neutered, ~120 lbs. Deck was rescued last year from a backyard situation. He was kept in a nasty poop covered stall, with alfalfa trampled into the floor (no wall feeder), and rub marks on the walls at sheep height. He was fed only alfalfa. We brought Deckard to our sanctuary and had our vet castrate him and remove the horn that was growing back into his skull behind an eye. Thankfully there was no permament damage. She said he was super chill and his heart rate wasn't even elevated by their presence :) His overgrown hooves fixed themselves just by being in a larger area with the ability to walk around on dry firm ground. Between pets and scissors from the humans, and him rubbing on his fencing and housing, most of his heavily matted wool came off last season; now he's sprouting a new, normal coat with our SoCal winter. He switched easily to a bermuda diet although he also looooves weeds (and everything else) and didn't want any of the minerals offered. Our vet said not to worry if he declined. He does not get grains anymore, nor alfalfa. We do not have the ability to turn Deckard out to graze and feel he would be much happier in a farm setting with pasture space. He does not have sheep companions and we have no idea how he'll be around other sheep, but there were other sheep in his original home and we hope he can have a chance to enjoy his own herd someday, or at least one other sheep buddy. Deckard has no sense of personal space and always invades your human space bubble (in a friendly way). He loves attention and neck/ear/nose scratches, and he doesn't like to be alone. He is currently housed next to pot belly pigs and chickens who are in their own enclosures. He is also fine around trained working livestock guardian dogs. We'd love to give Deckard a chance for a more ideal setting within SoCal and are happy to do a trial placement to ensure he is a good fit for his new farmily. Adoption fee and home visit will be required.
