Operation Duckling: 7 Babies Saved From Storm Drain

NEWARK, CA — It's a rite of spring in the East Bay. Tiny ducklings fall through a grate covering a storm drain, and Alameda County firefighters rescue them. Patch reports about them every year, but we never tire of the happy reunions. This rescue took place in Newark Saturday afternoon, at Chelsea Drive and Winsford Court. According to the fire department, seven ducklings were pulled from the storm drain. If that seems like a lot, a mallard duck typically days 7 to 10 eggs in a nest, but as many as 15, according to the Audubon Society. As you can see in the video, mama was on hand to welcome each duckling as it was rescued from below ground level. Today at 3:45 PM, Engine 29 was able to save seven ducklings that were trapped in a storm drain at Chelsea Drive and Winsford Court in Newark.
