Trump’s attempted to withhold aid and a White House meeting from Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky to try to get Ukraine to launch a politically expeditious — for Trump — investigation of Hunter Biden. Trump released the aid only when the gambit became untenable. Putin saw Trump doing a lot of his work for him, and thought, maybe in a second term, Trump would make good on his desire to get out of NATO, and then it would just ease Putin’s path just that much more. Putin would have gotten what he wanted in Ukraine for a lot lower price than he’s paying now. Donald Trump fits the Leninist phrase is ‘useful idiot,’ and they haven’t forgotten that in Moscow.
