Description
WalkArlington presents Walking Palooza. Walk a day in our shoes and explore Theodore Roosevelt Island on a guided hike with a park ranger. WalkArlington, in partnership with the National Park Service, presents a guided hike on Theodore Roosevelt Island with Park Ranger Janet Greene. Go on a history and nature walk, covering Theodore Roosevelt’s life, legacy, the overall story of the island, habitats, and flora and fauna. What To Know This hike will be done mostly on natural surface trails with some rocks, tree roots, and uneven surfaces. Wear comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots and be prepared for mud and muck. The amount of time this tour will take depends on a variety of factors. We have allowed two hours but may complete the ranger-led portion by 12:30. WalkArlington will provide a light, nutritious snack and bottled water that hikers can take with them. You are encouraged to bring additional water. Please note that there will be a bathroom break mid-way through the hike. To ensure an enjoyable and safe experience for all, group size for this hike will be much smaller than a typical WalkArlington walking event, so if you are interested, don’t delay registering. Getting There Theodore Roosevelt Island is accessible via a medium length (20-30 min.), downhill walk from the Rosslyn Metro. It is accessible via bike and the Mount Vernon Trail. There is also a Capital Bikeshare station on the island. Visit CarFreeAtoZ for trip planning information. About WalkArlington WalkArlington is Arlington County’s walking education and encouragement program, started in 2009. WalkArlington supports the County’s vision by working collaboratively with local citizens, businesses, stakeholders, and County departments to offer programs that promote active transportation choices! About the National Park Service and Theodore Roosevelt Island The National Park Service cares for special places saved by the American people so that all may experience our heritage. Considered “a living memorial,” Theodore Roosevelt Island is a memorial to America’s 26th president. It was developed in the 1930s by landscape architects who transformed it from a patch of wild, untended farmland into an oasis that mimics the features of a “real forest” that once covered the island. The island has miles of trails through wooded uplands and swampy bottomlands that honor the legacy of this great outdoorsman and conservationist. (For more information, see this page.)
