Ex-Deputy Gets Life Sentence For UGA Student's Murder: Report

ATHENS, GA — A former Georgia deputy will spend the rest of his life behind bars after pleading guilty to killing a University of Georgia graduate student more than two years ago, the AJC reported. According to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, officers arrested Winford "Trey" Terrell Adams, III, a Madison County deputy on Nov. 10, 2019 for murder. Prior to his arrest, police responded to the 6000 block of Old Jefferson Road just before 7 p.m. for a shooting. Once on scene, police said they ultimately determined that Adams shot Benjamin Lloyd Cloer, 26, of Athens multiple times following a "domestic incident." Police said Cloer was transported to a local hospital where he died from his injuries. Adams was taken into custody at the scene. He was off-duty and in plainclothes at the time of the shooting, police said. Prior to killing Cloer, Adams believed the UGA student was having an affair with his wife, the AJC reported.
