Description

Scott Gordon will speak about the process of researching our newest publication. Join us on April 9, 2022 at 4:00 p.m. to hear the author Scott Gordon discuss his process for researching this book and some of the challenges of tracing the earliest Moravian sites! The volume traces sites and structures from the Moravians’ earliest activity in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut. During their first two decades in the mid-Atlantic region, Moravians preached the gospel, built churches, established missions and schools, and launched ships. In most cases, little remains at these locations to mark this extraordinary work. This guide describes these places and provides addresses, when possible, so that users can visit the sites. The 32-page volume is in full color with richly illustrated images and maps. The book is beautifully designed by Heather Reinert. Scott Paul Gordon is the Andrew W. Mellon Chair in the Department of English at Lehigh University. He teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in eighteenth-century transatlantic literature. In 2002 Gordon received the Lindback Award for Distinguished Teaching and was named a Class of 1961 Professor for the years 2002-2004. Gordon’s edition of the vast correspondence of Mary Penry (1735-1804), who immigrated from Wales in 1744 and lived as a single sister in Moravian communities at Bethlehem and Lititz for nearly fifty years, was published by Penn State University Press in 2018 as "The Letters of Mary Penry: A Single Moravian Woman in Early America." Limited seating; reservations recommended. Please note the talk will be held on the second floor and is only accessible by stairs due to the historic nature of the building. The talk is free to attend!
