TACOMA, WA —Tacoma police said they continue to investigate what they believe was a smash-and-grab theft of money from an ATM early Monday morning from a local business.
According to reports, at 3:24 a.m., officers responded to an alarm at Walgreens, located at 2024 6th Ave., where they found damage to the business and an abandoned truck.
The TPD said it believes the suspects used the truck to smash into the drugstore, before breaking into the ATM and taking currency. The suspects then left the scene in a second vehicle, police said.
The TPD did not say how much money was taken in the heist.
King5.com reported that a regional manager for Walgreens estimated the damage to the store to be approximately $50,000.
King5.com also reported the robbery was the latest in a spate of ATM-related thefts in the area.
Early Friday, a similar smash-and-grab was attempted at a Walgreens in Renton. In that incident, the suspects tried to steal the ATM, but were unsuccessful.
On March 1, an ATM was stolen from a small market in Kent, and on Feb. 4, an ATM was stolen from a gas station near White Center.
