Mariners Acquire Jesse Winker, Eugenio Suarez In Trade With Reds

SEATTLE, WA —The Seattle Mariners on Monday made a trade with the Cincinnati Reds that will bring 2021 All-Star outfielder Jesse Winker and Reds' starting infielder Eugenio Suarez to T-Mobile Park. The Mariners will send starting pitcher Justin Dunn, outfielder Jake Fraley, pitching prospect Brandon Williamson and a player to be named later or cash considerations to Cincinnati. The left-handed-hitting Winker, 28, had a breakout season in 2021, batting .304, with 24 home runs and 71 RBIs in 110 games. He also made his first All-Star game. Suarez, 30, hit just .198 in 2021, though he did have 31 home runs. He was a 2018 All-Star and he finished that season with a .283 average, 34 home runs and 104 RBIs. He followed that up with a 2019 campaign in which he hit .271 with 49 homers and 103 RBIs. Perhaps, significantly, Suarez — who has played third base and shortstop — is owed at least $35.9 million over the next three years with a $15 million team option for 2025. The Reds appear to be cutting payroll, while the Mariners are in more of a win-now mode. Seattle has gone 21 years without making the playoffs, the longest postseason drought in North American team sports. Dunn, 26, started 11 games for the Mariners last year, going 1-3 with a 3.75 ERA, though he had a good chance to earn a spot in Seattle's rotation this season. Fraley, also 26, hit .210, with nine homers and 36 RBIs in 78 games last season. Williamson, a 6-foot-6 lefty, was considered the Mariners' No. 7 prospect in 2021, when the Prospect Rankings last were posted on MLB.com.
