2 Pierce County Deputies Shot Near Spanaway, Suspect Killed

SPANAWAY, WA — Two Pierce County deputies were shot midday Tuesday in Spanaway during a SWAT engagement. The suspect who fired on the officers has also been shot and killed. The shooting happened around noon near the intersection 190th Street Court S and Pacific Avenue S. As KING 5 first reported, two deputies were injured. Both were taken to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. One of the deputies has received surgery and is expected to recover. The other, however, is "gravely injured" and in critical condition, said Pierce County Sheriff Sergeant Darren Moss. "We're just asking for everybody's prayers right now," Moss told KING. Condolences for the deputies have been coming in from across the county. "Our most urgent positive thoughts are with the two Pierce County Deputies who were injured today," wrote the Gig Harbor Police Department. "This evening and tomorrow, you may see police cars from Gig Harbor & Lakewood covering calls on the Peninsulas while the Sheriff's Department shifts personnel around." The road has since been reopened. Little else about the shooting has been released. The Pierce County Force Investigation Team (PCFIT) will investigate the incident, a standard response for any incident in which police use deadly force inside the county.
