Norristown Schools Issue 1 Millionth Free Meal Of Pandemic

NORRISTOWN, PA — The Norristown Area School District and local officials celebrated a special milestone on Wednesday when they issued their one millionth free meal of the pandemic. Children in Norristown have received free breakfast and lunch five days per week since the coronavirus pandemic began. A total of 4,000 needy children received the meals each day, according to the district. Superintendent Christopher Dormer said the US Department of Agriculture and the Pennsylvania Department of Education were crucial in provided the funding needed to execute the program. "Superintendent Christopher Dormer, his administration and the faculty have done a tremendous job serving their families during this national crisis," State Sen Katie Muth said Thursday. "Thank you for your commitment to the community and the Norristown Area School District." Meal distributions have taken place at elementary schools and other locations on a weekly basis. Unlike other districts, Norristown moved to having only one pickup per week, with enough lunches and breakfasts provided per children to last that period of time. This way, individuals were not exposed to the public every day through the height of the pandemic. Each grab and go bag contains 12 meals.
