(Salt Lake City Patch) Here are the top three stories in Salt Lake City today: It wouldn't be a day in Salt Lake City without a battle over another proposed housing development. This time, it's a "rooming house" or what has been known historically as a Single Room Occupancy (SRO) proposed for SLC's east side, featuring shared kitchens and living space among 65 individual units that could potentially house 200 people. Some community members are pushing against the idea saying that it takes away renters' dignity and that it represents a form of housing only for those in desperate situations. (KUER 90.1) If you see something, say something. A local Salt Lake resident reported a "suspicious device" at the International Peace Gardens in Jordan Park, Sunday. Turns out, that's exactly what it was. Salt Lake Police, along with the Utah Air National Guard and the Hazardous Device Unit removed a 'military-grade device' from the park. Police are still investigating the exact nature of the device and how it ended up in the Peace Gardens along the Jordan River. (KSL.com) Chinatowns are more well known in America's coastal cities, but Salt Lake's Chinese immigrant history dates back to the continental railroad and the 1860s. The Chinatown gate on State Street in South Salt Lake along with the shopping center behind it is not nearly as historic, but it marks an entrance to something culturally significant something culturally significant, a celebration of not just Chinese food and culture, but a busy hub of Utah's broader Asian culture as well.
