Schools That Can (STC) Newark, in partnership with Prudential Financial and ShopRite of Newark, has launched a community math challenge for Newark students in third to eighth grades. The challenge is designed to help students see the real-world applications of math all around them and the important role math skills play in life – and not just in school. The challenge is part of a Prudential Financial initiative to help young people strengthen math skills and better prepare for math-intensive, high-skill careers, like actuary, at firms like Prudential. Schools That Can Newark is the lead partner in the initiative. “This initiative is critical to introducing Newark students to the importance of math, not only through exposing high school students to math careers such as actuarial science, but also now by engaging elementary and middle school students with math in their everyday lives,” said Sarah Keh, Vice President, Inclusive Solutions at Prudential Financial. “We are excited that STC Newark and ShopRite of Newark have partnered to bring this community math challenge to young people across the city and we hope it expands to more community locations in future years.” For the ShopRite Math Challenge, students enter the store and scan a QR code on the challenge’s poster. As they shop, they solve three math-related questions, and submit the form electronically. The questions challenge students to practice various shopping-related math skills, such as assessing unit prices, sale prices, and cost differences between items. It’s real-world, problem-solving through which young people can build their math skills. Questions vary based on grade level, ensuring the challenges are age appropriate. The challenge runs through March 2022. At the end, six winners will be drawn to win $50 gift cards donated by the ShopRite of Newark. “A lot of math goes into every part of the supermarket business – from logistics to inventory, costs, pricing and even meal preparation. We think this is a fun and practical way to engage young people with math and sharpen their math skills in the grocery aisle, and we are excited to participate in this great program,” said Neil Greenstein, owner and operator of the ShopRite of Newark. The challenge furthers STC Newark’s commitment to building real-world skills in Newark’s youth. “In order to help schools prepare students for success outside of the classroom, it is vital that students see firsthand how what they are learning at school is applicable in everyday life. The Prudential Math Initiative, including the ShopRite Math Challenge, is designed to do just that – help students appreciate how the math concepts they learn at school are necessary to be successful in the real world. We are grateful for our partnership with both Prudential and the ShopRite of Newark, and we can’t wait to see students engaging with these math challenges.” To participate in the challenge, visit the ShopRite of Newark, 206 Springfield Avenue, Newark, NJ 07103. The challenge runs through March 2022.
