More Than 40 Fruit Trees To Be Planted In Norristown Friday

NORRISTOWN, PA — A unique charitable endeavor in Norristown aims to both beautify the local area while improving food security for residents. Volunteers with multiple organizations will join together this Friday, Oct. 16 to plant more than 40 fruit trees and shrubs at Hancock Elementary School. Organizers say the trees will provide "nutrition and education" for the Norristown community. It's being put on by the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation, an international organization aiming to provide fruit-bearing trees to areas disproportionately impacted by poverty and lack of access to nutritious foods and fresh produce. Volunteers with the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and Keep Norristown Beautiful are joining in the initiative. The Foundation says they aim to plant 200,000 fruit trees around the world in 2020. These trees will generate 28 million pieces of fruit and eliminate 40 million pounds of environmentally harmful, excess carbon dioxide from the air per year. The event on Friday at Hancock begins at 10 a.m.
