COVENTRY, RI — Gusty winds helped fan an uncontrolled brush fire in Coventry Monday, the town's firefighters union said. The flames spread across more than two acres before they were extinguished, the union said. The firefighters' union urged all Coventry residents to be extremely careful when burning yard waste, especially during windy conditions. (Courtesy Coventry Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 3372) While wildfires can happen year-round, the busiest burning season is from March through May. "Traditionally, this is our busiest and potentially most destructive fire season," the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management said. "During this time of year, there is no leaf canopy, so the sun quickly dries out grasses and last autumn's fallen leaves, as well as dormant brush, and dead twigs and small branches." Typically windy conditions combined with low humidity make it easier for flames to spread, the department said. Regardless of where you live or the time of year, burn permits are required in Rhode Island for any open-air burn, the DEM reminded residents.
