ORLAND HILLS, IL — A former Orland Hills priest died Monday night after suffering a stroke, church officials said. Father Bill Gubbins died Monday, Mar. 14 at around 4:30 p.m. after a fellow pastor found him unconscious.
According to a spokesperson for the church, visitation for Fr. Gubbins will take place Friday at St. Elizabeth Seton Church from 2:30 - 9 p.m. A Mass for the priest will take place Saturday followed by a burial.
Gubbins had retired from St. Elizabeth Seton but was still frequently volunteering there, churchgoers told Patch. Current priest Father Bill Corcoran posted in a social media statement that he returned to this parish home Mar. 11 to find Gubbins on the floor by his bed.
Doctors told church officials Gubbins suffered a stroke and brain bleed and had been unconscious since Corcoran found him.
Due to Gubbins' age, he was not able to undergo brain surgery to stop the bleeding.
Members from Gubbins' family and children and teachers from Cardinal Joseph Bernardin School are invited to a private viewing before Friday's visitation.
