JOLIET, IL — One person was dead after a fiery high-speed crash in Joliet on Tuesday night. Around 8:15 p.m., Joliet police shut down traffic on Glenwood Avenue near AMITA St. Joseph Medical Center following a collision involving two vehicles.
The Joliet Firefighters Local 44 Facebook page said the crash was fatal, and Joliet police confirmed one death late Tuesday night.
Joliet Police Department spokesman Dwayne English said a female driver was westbound on Glenwood at a high rate of speed when her vehicle hit the back of another westbound vehicle that was stopped at the stoplight at Springfield Avenue.
The vehicle that was rear-ended burst into flames, and the driver was killed, English said. The female driver was taken to St. Joe's. Her condition was unknown Tuesday night.
Witnesses told Joliet Facebook Live's Bob Hernandez that one car was traveling at excessive speeds and collided with another car, causing an explosion. The Joliet Fire Department rushed to the scene, as did several Joliet police officers.
One witness told Hernandez that he believed nobody could have survived the crash. The witness said he did not see firefighters remove anyone from the vehicles.
The Joliet Police Department announced the traffic alert on its Facebook page and told people to stay from the area while the crash is being investigated.
