NAPERVILLE, IL — Naperville recently reached a milestone by opening its first compressed natural gas (CNG) station. The gas station, which is open to the public, will also be used to fuel some of the city's fleet. The unmanned gas station is open 24 hours a day and features light- and heavy-duty CNG fuel dispensers. CNG is a "cleaner methane that can be used in place of gasoline or diesel," according to a news release from the city. The move to open the CNG station has been seven years in the making and comes via a partnership with refuse and recycling contractor Groot Industries and Trillium, which provides alternative fueling systems and renewable fuels throughout the country. "A compressed natural gas station has been in the Ccty's plans for several years," Naperville Mayor Steve Chirico said in a news release. "While much has changed in the world this year, Naperville's commitment to sustainable initiatives has not. Our city fleet and community as a whole will benefit from this station for years to come and I commend everyone for working together to bring this project to a successful completion." Naperville currently has three vehicles that run on CNG, in addition to five propane, 11 electric and 16 hybrid vehicles. Groot Industries plans to have 30 percent of its fleet running on CNG within the next two years. The gas station is located at 1720 Jefferson Ave.
