NORTHPORT, AL — A busy MAPCO gas station on U.S. Highway 43 in Northport has announced it will cease operations at the end of March. However, Patch has confirmed that Midstates Petroleum Co. will take over the location and two others without missing a day of operations. Midstates Petroleum spokesperson Ric Mayers confirmed the news to Patch Tuesday afternoon, saying the gas pumps will not be replaced and the company is ready to put its branding on the location as soon as MAPCO finishes out its lease. Acquiring the Highway 43 location is part of a wider brand expansion for the company, as it grows its footprint in west Alabama following its purchase of Powell Petroleum and Buddy's Food Mart in the summer of 2020. Mayers also said the company secured deals for four MAPCO locations — three in Tuscaloosa —with others being at McFarland Boulevard/Highway 69 and on Oscar Baxter Drive near Lowe's. The MAPCO Mart, which first opened as a Discount Food Mart more than two decades ago at the bustling intersection of Highway 43 and Rose Boulevard, informed customers this week that the fuel station brand will continue to operate locations on Rice Mine Road and Bear Creek Road after the three other locations are closed. "It has been a pleasure serving you but unfortunately all good things come to an end," the franchise owners of the gas station said in a message to customers. An employee of the MAPCO told Patch on Tuesday that the lease had not been renewed for the location. Have a news tip or suggestion on how I can improve Tuscaloosa Patch?
