NAPERVILLE, IL — A Naperville man who worked as a special agent with Homeland Security Investigations has been indicted on federal charges of structuring and concealment, according to a news release. Anthony Sabaini, 38, was charged with five counts of willfully filing a false federal tax return, one count of structuring a currency transaction, and one count of willfully engaging in a scheme to conceal a material fact in a matter within the jurisdiction of the Department of Homeland Security while working in a field office in Oakbrook Terrace. Authorities say Sabaini deposited a total of $251,371 into his bank account between 2014 and 2018, using more than 160 different ATMs and teller transactions. Each deposit made was less than the federal reporting limit of $10,000, according to authorities. Authorities further allege that Sabaini underreported his income by filing false tax returns. Sabaini is also accused of submitting false memos for approval to use and pay a confidential informant and covering up the fact that the informant was a target of ongoing drug investigations by the FBI and DEA.
