NEWTOWN BOROUGH, PA — It was a busy Election Day at the Newtown Fire Station on Liberty Street, where hundreds of people lined up to cast their votes in the 2020 election. Gerard O'Malley, a former member of Newtown Borough Council, was one of those voters. "This is about protecting our democracy," O'Malley said. "I've always been an avid voter." While local elections officials declined to say how many people voted in the borough's first ward as of 5 p.m. Tuesday, they did confirm that turnout was higher than usual. "At this point, this is the highest turnout we've had in the last four years," Henry V. Tomlinson, Judge of Elections for Newtown Borough First Ward, told Patch. "This morning, the line was 40 minutes long, but everyone was cooperative." Polls will remain open until 8 p.m. Bucks County election officials have indicated that results may not be available until 10 p.m. on Election Night. More than 140,000 county residents submitted a mail-in ballot.
