NEWTOWN, PA — The owner of Newtown Athletic Club has been reappointed to the President's Council on Sports, Fitness and Nutrition, the White House announced this week. Jim Worthington will his serve his second term on the advisory council, which is overseen by the Department of Health and Human Services. Its members, which include NFL coach Bill Belichick, TV personality Dr. Mehmet Oz and Olympic Volleyball Gold Medalist Misty May-Treanor, meet several times throughout the year to discuss public and private partnerships to "increase sports participation among youth of all backgrounds and abilities and to promote healthy lifestyles for all Americans." Worthington is founder of the People 4 Trump Political Action Committee (PAC) and has been a key ally of the president in Bucks County since October 2016, when he hosted a campaign event at his club that reportedly cost Newtown Township $19,000 in police overtime. He recently announced plans to keep his club open despite new COVID-19 restrictions issued by Gov. Tom Wolf ordering indoor gyms to close until Jan. 4. Far from being the only business owner defying the state's orders, Worthington is one of reportedly dozens of restaurant and gym owners across the state who are publicly refusing to comply with the state health department.
