Leading Through a Global Pandemic: Our public health system and future threats - Kevin Ban, MD (Chief Medical Officer, Walgreens) Presented by the Healthcare Leadership Track at the Georgetown University School of Medicine Come hear from our guest speaker, Kevin Ban, MD - Chief Medical Officer of Walgreens and Georgetown CAS'90, Med'96 - as he shares some of the lessons learned while leading one of the country's largest healthcare players through a global pandemic as well as some insights for what may be on the horizon. Open to all Georgetown University students, faculty, and alumni. Per university guidelines, all attendees must show proof of COVID-19 vaccination, attest on the day of the event that they are symptom free, and continue to wear masks at all times during the event and while on campus. Upon registration, you will be sent instructions about how to upload your proof of vaccination and attest to being symptom-free. Kevin Ban, MD Bio Kevin Ban, M.D., was named the Chief Medical Officer of Walgreens in January 2020 where he has played an integral role in leading the company’s national pandemic response and defining its healthcare strategy. Formerly the Chief Medical Officer at athenahealth and Beth Israel Deaconess Needham, Kevin brings over 20 years of clinical experience and innovative medical systems development to his current role. Throughout his career, Kevin has focused on working collaboratively with fellow healthcare providers and administrators to improve patient centered care and outcomes. He is an expert in medical systems development, practice/performance improvement and is passionate about providing high quality, standardized, patient-centric care. Originally from northern New Jersey, Kevin graduated from Georgetown University with an BA in theology and later completed his MD from Georgetown’s School of Medicine after spending a year in South Africa as a volunteer teacher in an all-boys African school. Kevin completed 2 years of general surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia and completed his training at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s Harvard Affiliated Emergency Medicine Residency in Boston. After completing his residency training, Kevin joined Harvard Medical Faculty Physicians as an attending physician and was appointed to Harvard Medical School. He became the executive director of the Tuscan Emergency Medicine Initiative (TEMI)—an innovative project to develop emergency medicine as a training specialty in Tuscany, Italy where more than 900 physicians were certified during his tenure. He successfully built and led a team that launched Italy’s first pediatric trauma center. During his eight years working internationally on behalf of Harvard Medical International, Kevin learned how to manage large populations of patients to drive improved outcomes while decreasing the overall cost of care. In 2015, Kevin joined athenahealth, a healthcare technology company, to lead and expand its population health offering. He later became the company’s chief medical officer and worked with some of the nation’s largest healthcare systems. Early in his career, Kevin was an on-air healthcare analyst for the local ABC and FOX affiliates in New York and Boston, respectively. He is a regular guest of news and talk show programs and has appeared on The Today Show, MSNBC News, Morning Joe, Bloomberg TV and Good Morning America. He has contributed commentary and bylines to The Wall Street Journal, New York Times, NPR, and The Washington Post. He has published more than 30 articles in peer reviewed academic journals. Kevin lives in Boston with his wife, Caterina, their two children, Nicco and Julia, and two golden retrievers, Daisy and Rosie. He is an avid skier and a novice gardener. He has been a volunteer baseball, soccer, softball and basketball coach in Dover, MA where he is the president of the Friends of the Dover Greenway.
