The Works is an 80-acre adaptive reuse project by Selig Development that transforms one million square feet of 1950s-era warehouses The Works is an 80-acre adaptive reuse project by Selig Development that transforms one million square feet of 1950s-era warehouses into a modern mixed-use community in the Underwood Hills neighborhood on Atlanta’s Upper Westside. In the 1950s, Ben Massell, the first generation of the Selig family began assembling land along the CSX rail line in the area that would come to be known as the Chattahoochee Industrial area and developing industrial warehouses on formerly vacant land. Through the decades, the tenants in these warehouses made a conversion from heavy industrial (dependent on rail) to light industrial (rail not required) to showrooms, light retail, and makers of furniture, fixtures, and many other items. Four generations later, the concept for The Works was sparked by the late Scott Selig, who envisioned an iconic future for the 80-acre site, which would include a vibrant mixed-use community that celebrated its industrial roots while creating a thriving destination for retail, office, restaurants and residential. During the tour, attendees will learn how the Selig team was able to preserve the character and authenticity of the existing twentieth century brick warehouses, while bringing distinctive retail and dining options, creative office, inspired gathering areas and experiential programming to this growing area of the city. This walking tour will cover Phase One, 27 acres, of The Works development. This includes the Makers Building which features several locally owned shops along with Chattahoochee Food Works, a food hall by celebrity Chef Andrew Zimmern and Robert Montwaid; 1255 Makers Way an adaptive creative office space; main street retail to include Scofflaw Brewery, Fox Bros Bar-B-Q; The Camp, a one-acre park, The Camp; and The Spur, a 970-foot linear park and former path for rail cargo. Visitors may use any of the surface parking spots located on Makers Way and Chattahoochee Row as well as any level of the parking deck. Parking is free. The Works is ADA-compliant. All Phoenix Flies programs adhere to current City of Atlanta health and safety guidelines. All guests, program partners, and employees must wear CDC approved masks for the duration of their visit.
