INLAND EMPIRE, CA — The killer of a 72-year-old Riverside man struck by gunfire on Interstate 15 a week ago remains at large, and the California Highway Patrol Monday sought the public's assistance to identify the shooter. Aberlardo Magana was shot about 5 p.m. Dec. 14 in the southbound lanes of I-15, near Jurupa Street, in Ontario, according to the CHP. "As far as anyone can tell at this point, he was just an innocent victim," Officer Dan Olivas told City News Service. "It was a case of being in the wrong place at the wrong time." According to Olivas, Magana was at the wheel of a Ford pick-up truck heading back into Riverside County when the driver of a black Kia SUV opened fire and at least one round entered the victim's vehicle, striking him in the upper body. Magana's truck veered off of the freeway and hit a light pole along the shoulder. Passing motorists reported it as a crash, and officers arrived within a few minutes, locating the victim inside the vehicle, mortally wounded. Olivas said investigators do not believe Magana was the intended target, and was likely caught in the middle of a dispute between other parties. Anyone with information was asked to contact the CHP's Inland Division at 909-806-2435, or the We Tip Hotline at 800-78-CRIME.
