Social Art Classes for People with Disabilities in Berkeley!

Events

Ashby near Adeline, Berkeley CA

Description

Hey folks, my name is Dan Davy. I've been volunteering as an art teacher for adults with with disabilities at New Space Studio located in the Ed Roberts Campus just across from Ashby BART since 2014. We are seeking new artists to join our classes, beginning in mid-April, so if you or anyone you know has a disability and an interest in creating art and building community, please don't hesitate to reach out. Our classes will range from 2-4 hours long, and have a suggested donation of $10 with all supplies included. The classes are freeform with moderate guidance, but not structured lessons. It's more of a social/art group wherein volunteers encourage artists to gently explore their creativity, while building social skills and friendships. Outside of volunteering with NSS, I am a freelance caregiver and mentor for people with disabilities in the Bay Area. I've worked for people with autism, Alzheimer's, depression, anxiety disorders, and Tourette's, to name a few. I have a degree in Psychology, and a minor in Art History, which I never really used until becoming a volunteer with NSS. I, myself, learned how to draw and paint while volunteering at NSS, so I am enthralled by the prospects of meeting more students for our new classes. Admittedly, I'm still very much an art student myself, but I'm grateful to share what skills, both social and artistic, I've built through my years at NSS, and to learn more from my students. Okay then, I plan on starting at least 3 of these classes on weekdays only, but don't have a firm schedule yet. I'm hoping there's enough interest here that we can get up to 8 people per class, but no more. For safety purposes, we will require all students to be vaccinated and boosted, unless they have medical exemptions. Anyway, feel free to reach out with any questions whatsoever. Thank you so much!
