It is the time when the prophet Muhammad is said to have received the words of the Koran, the holy book that is the basis for Muslim faith. During Ramadan people fast (don't eat or drink) while it is light outside. Once the sun sets, families meet for a big meal called an iftar, which may include dates, apricots, sweetened milk, breads, stew, rice, vegetables, and lentils.For the hundreds of millions of Muslims around the world who observe Ramadan, the month is a time to pray, be kind and generous, and spend time with loved ones. After the last day of Ramadan, there is a three-day festival called Id al-Fitr with lots of lights, gifts, food, and pastries.
