GC Student Advances To International Science And Engineering Fair

GARDEN CITY, NY — The second round of the 2022 Long Island Science and Engineering Fair was held on March 8, and two Garden City High School students did impressively well. More than 400 students submitted projects virtually for the first round. Of those, 101 were invited to compete in round 2, held in-person at the Crest Hollow Country Club. Among them were Garden City students James Nagler and Olivia Bailey. Nagler's project entitled "Project Vision - Virtual environment through AI recognition," sought to design a prototype device that would assist the visually impaired in navigating their environments. He utilized custom-designed circuit boards and was successful in constructing and building a working prototype. He was the 1st place Grand Award Winner in the combined category of Embedded Systems and Robotics and Intelligent Machines. He was judged to be the very best project in this category. Nagler now moves on to the next round, the International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF), where he will compete with students from throughout the United States, North America and worldwide. Bailey's project, entitled "Machine Learning Prediction and Analysis of COVID-19 Vaccination Rates by State" sought to discover what factors are most important in contributing to variations in vaccination rates throughout the United States, an important public health question. Bailey received an Honorable Mention medal in the category of Behavioral Science for her project, which was in the top 24 percent of the entire fair.
