From the Richard Free Press: By Jon DePaolis MOKENA, Ill. – This April, Frank Fleischer will seek a third term as mayor of the Village of Mokena. Fleischer, who was first elected mayor in 2013, told Richard Free Press of his bid for re-election on Tuesday, Oct. 13. "There's still a few things I want to get done," Fleischer said. For the incumbent mayor, that begins with continuing to keep Mokena residents safe. "It's going to be one of my top issues – to make sure that Mokena is as safe and secure as it has always been," Fleischer said. "That is a big concern of the residents." He said the Village Board made a promise to residents after a string of car thefts in January that it would look at options to bolster the safety and security of the community. "They were concerned about the hijackings and things like that increasing out here with car thefts," Fleischer said. "One of the things I wanted to do – which we have done – is get the police department fully staffed. And … we also got the license plate cameras, which are a very big deal." Fleischer also wants to keep Mokena's fiscal policies intact. "The municipality still has the lowest real estate taxes out of any municipality in Will County," Fleischer said. "I'm very proud of that, and we want to keep that going." He also expressed a desire to continue creating a vibrant downtown district for residents. "I think the residents of the Village of Mokena want a downtown," he said. "I've talked to plenty of residents, and they want a viable downtown where they can walk around and walk into businesses and restaurants." Fleischer also said he has heard that residents want more communication from the Village. "I want to try to figure out the best way that we can get the word out to the residents," he said. Fleischer was re-elected in 2017 after running unopposed. Prior to his time as mayor, Fleischer served on the Village Board as a trustee for 16 years, from 1987 to 2003. "I am proud to be the mayor of Mokena," Fleischer said. "My wife and I have lived here for 43 years. [Mokena] is home. "I also want to thank [the residents] for electing me over the years for the different positions that I've held. I promise them I will do the same job as I've done before, and that I am committed to be the best mayor they have ever had."
