Hoboken School Referendum: Tuesday Last Day To Fill Out Survey

HOBOKEN, NJ — What kind of new school facilities would you like to see in Hoboken, and do you have comments on the proposed $241 million plan that failed in a vote in January? The Hoboken Board of Education is keeping its survey online through Tuesday. A bond referendum for a project involving a new high school with rooftop athletic facilities failed by a vote of 2-1 on Jan. 25. The Board of Education will have to introduce a new plan to the public if they want new school facilities, in a year at the earliest. Board President Sharyn Angley said Monday that she can't give a timeline for when the board expects to have a new plan in place. "We are waiting to review the survey results and to discuss them before I can provide you with an answer," she said, noting that the state's Department of Education would have to approve any proposed changes. After the project was revealed to the public in November, five public meetings were held, as well as presentations at PTO meetings. But some voters believed the project was too costly, didn't allow enough public participation and comment, or had other issues with the project. The board can come back with a new plan next year. They have said some of the district's six buildings are outdated and need to be replaced. (Read more about the past plan and referendum results here.) After the survey was posted last month, some critics said it seemed like the board may just propose the same project again. Board members were asked last week about this notion. Angley responded with a statement saying the board had heard all kinds of feedback. "Throughout the time leading up to the referendum we heard a lot from strong supporters and strong opponents," she said. "That feedback is invaluable." She added, "We are hoping the survey reaches those individuals, but also touches community members who may still have had questions on January 25th, individuals who voted but may not have been vocal throughout the process, individuals who chose not to vote for various reasons, etc." Fill out the survey here.
