Researchers at BIDMC are conducting a study to understand the impact of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) on negative symptoms of schizophrenia. Negative symptoms of schizophrenia include low motivation and the inability to feel pleasure. Participants will be divided into two groups. One group will receive TMS treatment and one will receive a sham treatment that looks and feels like TMS. Estimated completion time for this study is 3 weeks. Throughout the course of the study, participants will complete: ● Two MRI scans ● One week of TMS/sham treatments, with one morning treatment and one afternoon treatment on each day ● Neuropsychological testing to assess memory, attention, and thinking ● A clinical interview with the study doctor Eligible participants are those who: ● Are aged 18-55 ● Have a diagnosis of schizophrenia ● Have not been hospitalized or changed medications in the last 30 days Participants will be paid up to $1300 upon completion of this study.
