Mr. Lyga: There are indeed similarities between our declaring war with N. Vietnam, and Putin's move in Ukraine. We thought we were saving S.E. Asia from communism, which in the 50's & 60's was probably the ugliest boogeyman we believed existed. The irony of course, when we cut and run and left our embassy in Saigon, S. Vietnam did indeed fall to the North in short order, but all of the things we feared would happen, did not happen. In fact, life was better for South Vietnam (which just became Vietnam) than it had been in decades because it was the first generation to live without war on their soil. The differences include, Ukraine once belonged to the Soviet Union. In fact, it has been very recent their declaration of independence. It would be akin to Alaska declaring independence, and the United States military declaring civil war to bring it back under American control. Some would call our military patriots. The sad fact is we care zero, nothing, zip about the Ukraine. It is like Taiwon which we care nothing about either. They are actually liabilities, eating up enormous chunks of our budget, and yielding no return. None except they are both thorns in the side of our two rival superpowers. It would be as if Russia meddled openly in Cuba and encouraged a Russian style government, sent weapons and military training, and encouraged the populace to perennially needle us.
