FOXBOROUGH, MA — Tom Brady will return to the NFL for his 23rd season, he announced Sunday night on social media. Brady, 44, will be the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback. He'll be 45 by the time the season begins. His retirement lasted 41 days. "These past two months I've realized my place is still on the field and not in the stands," Brady said. "That time will come. But it's not now. I love my teammates, and I love my supportive family. They make it all possible. I'm coming back for my 23rd season in Tampa. Rumors were circulating if his career was over after the Buccaneers lost to the Rams in the playoffs, but Brady kept the world on its toes. When ESPN reported he decided to walk away, he denied any decision had been made. Days later, he said his career was over. "This is difficult for me to write, but here it goes: I am not going to make that competitive commitment anymore," Brady wrote on social media at the time. "I have loved my NFL career, and now it is time to focus my time and energy on other things that require my attention." Not long after that, he reminded us to "never say never" about a potential comeback. Never, indeed. Brady has won a record 7 Super Bowls across more than two decades with the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He is the all-time leader in nearly every major passing category, winning three NFL MVPs and five Super Bowl MVPs. No one has even won more games at any position than Brady. Now he's back to extend those records. The Buccaneers have said they would welcome Brady back with open arms. Now he's returning just in time for Tampa, days before the NFL free agency kicks off this week. The team no longer needs to find a quarterback and should remain a destination for players looking to pursue a title alongside No. 12.
