FOXBOROUGH, MA — Talk about a bad investment. One man took an absolute bath this weekend after Tom Brady announced Sunday night he was returning to the NFL for a 23rd season. The reason? The unidentified man just hours earlier spent $518,628 in an auction on the football of what was thought to be Brady's final touchdown pass of his career. Now, assuming Brady throws at least one touchdown this year, that ball is the same as the other 623 he's thrown for touchdowns. Brady threw the ball to Mike Evans for a 55-yard score at the end of an epic postseason game against the eventual Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams. Evans tossed the ball into the stands. Once Brady announced his retirement, the value of the ball skyrocketed. When he announced his return, the value presumably evaporated. Jordan Gilroy, director of acquisitions at Lelands Auctions, told Fox13 in Tampa the Florida couple selling the ball could fetch up to $1 million. Looks like they sold not a moment too soon. Action Network reported the person who won the auction likely hasn't received the invoice yet, since it closed Saturday night. A Lelands spokesperson told Action it has no comment.
