Press release from Gateway Community College: March 9, 2022 GCC is pleased to officially announce that the college has been selected as a Campus Compact host site for the 2022-23 AmeriCorps program! Through VISTA, GCC seeks to increase food security measures for students and employees through the development and implementation of an on-campus food pantry. The AmeriCorps VISTA hire will play an integral part in assessing the needs of the GCC community related to food insecurity and to plan development of the pantry to address those needs. build capacity for GCC by seeking outside funding, developing partnerships with food security-related organizations, and creating effective systems to track food security efforts at GCC. This will be a part of a brand-new initiative, serving a community in need, and advance the anti-poverty mission of AmeriCorps through visibility of and access to equitable food security services. Serving the largest proportion of Pell-Grant recipients in the Connecticut State College and University System, GCC's student body represents a culturally, linguistically, and socioeconomically diverse population. The college aims to develop an on-campus food pantry to reduce food insecurity for all low-income students and employees to increase academic success and future economic opportunity. The college is accepting applications to join the Wellness Center team as an AmeriCorps member with Campus Compact to assist GCC in addressing food insecurity on campus, and we look forward to working with @Campus_Compact and are excited to see what we can accomplish together.
