Press release from Arlington Public Library: Wednesday, January 26, 2022 The Arlington Public Library joins the nation in celebrating Black history and community this February. In honor of Black History Month, the library will host a series of programs throughout the month. Black History Month is an annual celebration of the culture and achievements of African Americans. Established as one week in 1926, it was expanded to a month in 1976 by President Gerald Ford. Since then, every U.S. President has recognized February as Black History Month. During this time, the nation observes the contributions of African Americans in politics, sports, entertainment, and more. It is also a time to reflect on the many who fought for civil rights. The Arlington Public Library will commemorate Black History Month with a series of programs that celebrate the history and culture of African Americans. Community Talks: Reading Jay-Z with Dr. Kenton Rambsy Downtown Library, February 9, 6:30 p.m. Join us for a talk with Dr. Kenton Rambsy on Jay-Z, diversity, and inclusion. Dr. Rambsy is a professor at The University of Texas at Arlington and teaches a course on reading Jay-Z lyrics as poetry. What is Anti-Racism? Book Talk with Hedreich Nichols Southeast Branch, February 15, 6 p.m. Meet author Hedreich Nichols, who wrote What is Anti-Racism? Participants will learn more about this children's title and speak directly with the author! Community Talks: Measuring the Influence of BLM Protests with Dr. Bai Linh Hoang Southeast Branch, February 17, 6:30 p.m. Join us for a presentation by Dr. Bai Linh Hoang, UTA political science professor. Dr. Hoang will share her preliminary findings on whether the Black Lives Matter protests against police brutality encouraged city councils to re-evaluate their police budgets. Dr. Hoang utilized data from the 100 largest cities in the U.S. A Black History Month Panel Discussion on STEM Careers with Black Professionals & Students Downtown Library, February 17, 7 p.m. Join us for a conversation with Black STEM professionals and scholars. This panel will discuss their educational journeys, their current challenges, and their successes in order to encourage the next generation to follow in their footsteps. Beginning African American Genealogy Research with Sabra Johnson Southeast Branch, February 22, 7 p.m. Learn to explore your own family history guided by African-American genealogist, Sabra Johnson. Family Storytime - Black History Month Southeast Branch, February 25, 10:30 a.m. Parents can come and sing, read, and wiggle with their little ones during storytime at the Southeast Branch Library! This storytime is appropriate for ages 2-5. We will read books, sing songs, and have an activity after the program. Black History Month Festival Southeast Branch, February 26, 12-3 p.m. Celebrate the diversity of Black culture with music, dance, history, displays, and more. Bring the whole family to this annual event!
